PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — There’s more national attention tonight (10 pm on PBS) for the kids from West Philadelphia High School, whose super-hybrid car beat some of the biggest universities and companies in a worldwide competition.

The PBS program “Frontline” tonight profiles the “Hybrid X” team from West Philly High, which two years ago beat 90 of 111 teams in a $10-million global competition for cars that get more than 100 miles per gallon.

Team leader Simon Hauger says the program shows how the car built by his West Philly High kids beat out vehicles from universities and well-funded corporations.

“While we were trying to win the competition, really we’re educators at the end of the day.  And to me, the real story is about the educational value of this approach,” he tells KYW Newsradio.

Hauger now runs the Sustainability Workshop at the Navy Yard, an alternative senior-year program for Philadelphia schools.
